Gabe Newell thinks Pokemon Go should have a bigger impact on mobile gaming – Creo Gaming –

Almost six years after its debut, Pokémon Go remains one of the most popular mobile games in the world. But the AR revolution he promised has yet to happen, and Valve co-founder Gabe Newell is one of the frustrated people.

Speaking to Rock Paper Shotgun about the Steam Deck’s release, Newell said he thinks Pokémon Go should have “more impact” on mobile gaming. Instead, other events, such as the Harry Potter wizard reunion, have largely disappeared.

Instead, Newell hopes Valve can continue to launch Steam Deck by creating a more mobile experience that makes sense for the platform.

“I think Pokémon Go should have had more of an impact on people thinking about skills than it could with mobile games, and it really didn’t.” said Newell. “I think that’s one of the things that we’re really excited about, you know, we built this building block, this very critical set of components, to make it happen. And now we’re really going to do something. The fun stuff we get into R&D mode. † †

Valve has a history of making games that take advantage of innovations in its technology. Half-Life: Alyx is the latest example of this, as it was designed with Valve’s VR hardware in mind.

Newell says he looks forward to new opportunities. †[I]It’s also very interesting to say that we’re going to prototype three or four different new ideas for what to put on a mobile gaming platform that enhances the experience. Visit software developers and ask them to say “This is bullshit” or “Oh, that’s cool”. Or “Oh my God, you have to do this” and “Let’s work together on a software prototype that fits your hardware prototype and really test those features.” It’s quite exciting when you not only fully explore it to the point where you can do it, but also start to be open to what you can do in that environment. Yes, we are quite excited. We really want to stay innovative.

We just got the Steam Deck, which we call “well-built hardware” that doesn’t have a particularly stylish user experience. We also spoke to Newell about the platform’s future launch and Valve confirmed that it has no plans to increase the price of the three original equipment configurations.
