The program consists of three conferences, each with two separate groups from six countries and regions. These countries and regions were selected based on Overwatch 2 player population data. Registrations for the competition committee begin in February. In addition, each participating country and region will host World Cup competitions over three weekends in February (10-12 February, 17-19 February and 24-26 February). Match Committees are responsible for organizing additional team friendlies in March and assembling a squad of seven players in April.

In addition to the 36 countries and regions selected, the Overwatch World Cup 2023 will feature a Wildcard Challenge, awarding four additional spots for teams. Details of the wildcard challenge will be announced in February.
In June, teams in their group will compete for one of 16 spots in the LAN finals, which will be held in the fall of 2023. Given the current momentum in China and the fact that a team from China has consistently performed very well, including two second place finishes in the last two Overwatch World Cups, a team from China will receive a direct invite to the group stage. There will be no World Cup trials in China and the team will not participate in the online qualifiers. The pilot process in China will be different from other countries/regions. We will share more information about this process with players in the China region.
