The release of GTA 6 breaks a record that has been frustrating for over five years

Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6): A frustrating launch record

Gamers around the world are eagerly awaiting the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) on Xbox and PlayStation. In fact, it’s been over a decade since Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013, making it increasingly difficult to wait for Rockstar Games’ next crime epic. But GTA 6 is not far away! Rockstar recently announced that a trailer for the highly anticipated game will be released in early December, marking the first step towards its release. Additionally, publisher Take-Two Games has hinted that the video game giant could finally launch in 2024, thanks to ambitious financial forecasts for the following year.

A record to break

If it hasn’t been officially announced yet, when Grand Theft Auto 6 releases (likely in the second half of 2024), it will break the record for the longest wait time of any major game. Currently, the longest delay between games was between GTA 4 and GTA 5, at five years and four months. However, when GTA 6 is released, the gap between it and the last game (GTA 5) will be almost 11 years, a disappointing record that the game will keep for a while.

The shortest gap between the major Grand Theft Auto games occurred between Grand Theft Auto 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which were released almost exactly a year apart in October 2001 and October 2002 respectively.

Why is it taking so long for GTA 6 to be released?

Looking at the data, we can easily conclude that the difference between GTA 5 and GTA 6 is an unprecedented difference in the history of the series. This decade-long wait has fans clamoring for a continuation of the series after GTA 5. Why did it take so long for Rockstar Games to release its next game under the name Grand Theft Auto? The main reason for this is the online game Grand Theft Auto. This multiplayer addition to Grand Theft Auto 5 gave the game a longer shelf life than other games in the series, allowing the studio to make money through in-game microtransactions instead of releasing an entirely new game.

According to 2022 data, Rockstar Games earned an average of $500 million per year from GTA Online alone. This online revenue stream from the latest game means the studio doesn’t have to release a new GTA to the world. Instead, it decided to keep GTA Online (and therefore GTA 5) alive and bring improved versions of the game to new consoles as they were released.

In theory, this gave the GTA 6 development team more time to innovate and build on GTA 5’s groundbreaking foundation. Hopefully it’ll be worth the wait when Rockstar and Take-Two announce more GTA 6 news soon. December. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release in 2024 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
