The cheapest PC you can build to play Fortnite at high speed and 60 fps.
Fortnite is currently the most popular Battle Royale game among users of this type of game. So much so that even Valve, the developer of CS:GO, arguably the oldest multiplayer game on the web, was forced to create its own Battle Royale mode called Danger Zone. In this article we are going to see what components we need to make a cheap computer that will allow us to play Fortnite with a high level of detail and high FPS.
The big advantage of Fortnite over AAA games is that the recommended requirements when playing online are not high at all. These are:
- CPU: 2.8GHz Intel Core i5
- Memory: 8GB
- VGA: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870
- VRAM: 2 GB
Design a PC for Fortnite
Since the processor does not need to be particularly powerful (a 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5 is a fairly low processor today), we can opt for an Intel Core i3-8100, which also has 4 cores, but its frequency turbo goes up to 3 0.6GHz. This processor will cost you 149.95 euros. That’s quite a jump from the $100 this processor originally cost, but we’re already aware of the supply issues facing Intel and its 14nm node.
On the other hand, if we prefer to buy an AMD processor, for the same money as the Intel processor we can buy an AMD Ryzen 5 1600X, with six cores and twelve threads that leaves it far behind in terms of gaming performance . In games and in every activity, if we’re honest.
But if you want to save a little more, you can always opt for the AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, which gives you four cores and eight threads for just $129.99.
As for the heatsink, in the case of AMD processors, the OEM model that comes with it is more than sufficient to cool these processors with ease. On the contrary, it is imperative that the Intel processor installs a halfway decent heatsink. You can opt for the Nox Hummer H212, which can keep your processor nice and cool for only €21.
For Intel motherboards, we consider the ASRock B360M-HDV a budget model, but it has everything you need to get the most out of the processor, even with an M.2 slot for connecting solid NVMe storage units . or SATA. This ASRock motherboard costs 78.30 euros.
For a similar price and without leaving the manufacturer, we have the ASRock AB350M-HDV motherboard. This model is also very compact. And by using the B450 chipset, you can easily overclock the processor (remember that all AMD Ryzen processors have the multipliers unlocked). The price is 73.45 euros.
For RAM, we use a single recommendation for both types of devices, both Intel and AMD. It’s the Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz 16GB kit that costs €159.99, although it’s easy to see for sale. Of course, remember that the Intel processor and motherboard do not allow you to set the RAM frequency above 2666MHz.
For the graphics card, we wanted to add an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, although theoretically it will work perfectly with the GTX 1050. However, we also hope that the computer will not only be used to play Fortnite, but many other games and for most current titles are at least 4GB of VRAM a real must if you don’t want to experience any lags when playing. Anyway, these graphics are capable of pushing the high mode to 60 and 70 FPS with ease. That’s why we decided on the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050 Ti D5 for 173.90 euros.
As SSDs are really cheap now, we opted to fit a 240GB capacity Kingston A400 for storage, which at just £38.19 we don’t think is an excuse not to fit one.
If you think Kingston’s 240GB SSD might be too small for you, you can always add a 1TB Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM010 hard drive for $45.29, which is a very reasonable price.
As a power source, this system does not require a very powerful model. And an excellent option is the Corsair VS450, which has more than enough power to power both systems and also comes with an 80Plus certification.
Finally, for the box that contains the equipment we designed to play Fortnite, we opted for the Cooler Master Force 500, a rather large box for a Micro-ATX model that has a price of 41.49 euro has, although it is common, see it in the offer.
Overall, the configuration with the Intel Core i3-8100 processor will cost 738.17 euros, while the version with the AMD Ryzen 5 1600X processor will cost 707.77 euros.
